Day 19 – Animals are Smart Cookies and A Smart Raw Cookie Recipe

11 Feb

The animals people regularly eat are social, intelligent, emotional creatures. Many times it is easy to disassociate the living being from the hamburger, but animals are actually smart cookies.

Chickens are smarter than dogs, cats, and even some primates. When chickens lay eggs in natural settings, mother hens teach her chicks several calls while sitting on them. The chicks respond to their mother from inside their shells.

Cows develop social dynamics including alpha animals and friendships within their herds. They interact in socially complex ways, similar to wolf packs. Studies conducted in the UK prove that cows enjoy solving problems and become excited when they are successful by displaying increased heart rates and jumping.

Pigs are also smarter than dogs, and they can play video games. These loyal, friendly, affectionate animals have better intellectual abilities than a 3-year-old child.

Another smart cookie, made from nuts and oats, will fulfill any cravings you may be having for sweets:

Raw Chocolate Chip Cookies
makes about 8

1 cup raw cashews
1/2 cup oats
3-4 Tbsp coconut oil
1/8 tsp vanilla powder
1/2 cup raw cacao chips*

  • Process cashews and oats in food processor until they become a fine powder.
  • Stir in oil, vanilla, and chips. Add more oil as necessary until mixture can be molded into a “dough”
  • Form cookie shapes by hand and place on cookie sheet. Place in freezer for 10-20 minutes or until hardened.
  • Transfer to container and store in the refrigerator.

*I didn’t have any cacao chips or nibs on hand, so I mixed 8 Tbsp coconut oil with 3 Tbsp cacao powder and poured it into a shallow dish. After placing it in the freezer for 20 minutes, I was able to break the “chocolate” into small chunks and use them in my cookies instead.
